AWS TV - Video Hub

Think of a Youtube channel for people in tech. AWS TV is a video platform of technical knowledge for tech workers and businesses who want to stay current with industry knowledge through keynote sessions, summits, and how-to videos. My feature based designs cater to various modalities of learning such as videos activated transcripts, content suggestive algorithm, and way-finding topic tags.

People Problems

  •  In-betweeners: How might we create a flexible learning platform that seamlessly integrates both video and written content about AWS topics, for cloud professionals in various roles, so that they may access all the information they need in their preferred format without switching between multiple resources?

  •  Video Leaners: How might we streamline the process of finding relevant and technically detailed AWS video content, for cloud professionals in individual contributor or manager roles, so that they may quickly access the information they need without wasting time sifting through unhelpful videos?

  •  Written Leaners: How might we provide comprehensive, text-based AWS learning resources, for senior cloud professionals in roles like C-Suite, VPs, or Senior Architects, so that they may efficiently learn and stay updated on AWS topics using their preferred content format?

Research and Analysis

Research Methodology:

This study employed a mixed-methods approach, including:

1.    Quantitative: Survey with AWS Customer Council members (Phase I - 2047 surveys)

2.    Qualitative:

  •  In-depth interviews (IDIs) with AWS Customer Council members and AWS Heroes (Phase II - 30 interviews)
  •  IDIs with AWS customers and non-customers (Phase III - 25 interviews)
  • Focus groups with AWS re:Invent attendees (Phase IV - two 90-minute focus groups)

How Templates Enahnce Consistency

Integrating AWS TV into the AWS Website relies heavily on design consistency, existing mental models, and navigation affordances, to create a great customer experience.

  • Breadth - Amount of topics or sub-topics with low to medium detail
  • Depth - Amount of categories of details or sub-categories with medium to high details
  • Features - Functionality available within the experience, could include filtering, navigation, transcripts
Strategy 1

Our Biggest Challenge

Our team faced significant technical constraints in implementing a robust content categorization system within our tight development timeline. The original vision included dedicated category pages to enhance topic-specific learning journeys. However, resource limitations necessitated a strategic pivot.

We innovated by reimagining our search functionality, transforming it into a dynamic, adaptive interface. This solution allows users to refine their content exploration through category selections, instantly refreshing results without navigating away from the search page. This approach not only accommodated our technical limitations but also streamlined the user experience by reducing page loads and maintaining context.

This adaptive search design demonstrates our commitment to user-centric solutions, balancing technical feasibility with user needs. It showcases our ability to pivot quickly, transforming potential setbacks into opportunities for UX enhancement. The result is a more fluid, responsive content discovery system that adapts to user intent in real-time, setting a foundation for future scalability and feature expansion.

Designer to Developer Handoff

Working with our developer partners is a 3-fold experience. Delivery of assets must meet rigorous refinment including designing all templates for all break points to be scalable to all device sizes. Components and patterns must be consistent with our Aura design system and contain spec documentation to alleviate confusion. Lastly a series of hand off meetings as well as weekly touchpoints to execute UI scrubbing which essentially fixes or changes prod errors.
